History of Delhi

Delhi is an Indian city and union territory that includes New Delhi, the country’s capital. It is officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Delhi shares borders with the states of Uttar Pradesh in the east and Haryana in the remaining directions, straddling the Yamuna river, primarily on its western or right bank. The NCT has a total area of 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi). The National Capital Region (NCR), which includes the satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon, and Noida, has an estimated population of over 28 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in India and the second-largest in the world (after Tokyo).

The topography of the mediaeval fort Purana Qila on the banks of the Yamuna river corresponds to the literary description of the citadel Indraprastha in the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata; however, excavations in the area have turned up no evidence of an ancient built environment. From the early 13th century to the mid-19th century, Delhi served as the capital of two major empires, the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, both of which ruled over large areas of South Asia. This period is represented by the city’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, and the Red Fort. Sufism and Qawwali music originated in Delhi. It is closely associated with the names Nizamuddin Auliya and Amir Khusrau.

The Delhi Khariboli dialect was part of a linguistic evolution that resulted in Urdu literature and then Modern Standard Hindi literature. Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Ghalib are two major Urdu poets from Delhi. The 1857 Indian Rebellion was centred in Delhi. In 1911, New Delhi, a southern region of Delhi, was designated as the capital of the British Indian Empire. During India’s Partition in 1947, Delhi was transformed from a Mughal to a Punjabi city, losing two-thirds of its Muslim residents, in part due to pressure from arriving Hindu refugees from western Punjab. Following India’s independence in 1947, New Delhi served as the Dominion of India’s capital until 1950.
