With a temperature of 50 °C, Dholpur is thought to have had India’s highest recorded temperature. The stifling summer season is marked by May and June, which are the hottest months. Summertime temperatures are typically greater than 40 °C. The two coldest months are December and January, with occasionally sub-zero and near-zero temperatures. -4.3 °C is the coldest temperature ever recorded. 860 mm of rain falls annually on average.

Location

The city of Dholpur (also known as Dhaulpur) is located in Madhya Pradesh, across the Chambal River and the state’s boundary with Morena, at 26° 42′ 0″ North and 77° 54′ 0″ East. It is a North Central Railway junction and is situated on the former NH-3. Dholpur city has a total size of 33.3 square kilometres.

History of Dholpur

Dholpur was a small kingdom with a turbulent history due to its strategic location on the main route connecting Kabul and Delhi. Furthermore, its proximity to powerful cities such as Gwalior, Agra, and Bayana drew many rulers who wanted to take advantage of its strategic location. The brave rulers of Dholpur always did their best to resist any attempt to subjugate them, but the city was regularly attacked by invading forces. Dholpur was repeatedly attacked and nearly razed to the ground by neighbouring kings from Sikander Lodi in 1501 AD to Babur in 1526 AD. During Humayun’s reign, the town of Dholpur was relocated northwards to avoid erosion by the Chambal River.

Two significant Mughal wars took place near Dholpur, the first in 1658, when Aurangzeb defeated his brother Dara Sikoh. The second was a succession war fought in 1707 AD between Aurangzeb’s sons.
