Pushkar Camel Fair

The Pushkar Fair, also known as the Pushkar Camel Fair or locally as the Kartik Mela or Pushkar ka Mela, is a yearly multi-day animal fair and cultural festival held in the town of Pushkar near Ajmer city in the Ajmer district in the state of Rajasthan (Rajasthan, India). The fair runs from the beginning of the Hindu calendar month of Kartik until the end of Kartik Purnima, which normally falls between the end of October and the beginning of November according to the Gregorian calendar. Around a million people visited Pushkar in 1998 during the course of the entire year. Almost 200,000 people come to the Pushkar fair alone.

The Pushkar Fair draws close to 200,000 people.

One of India’s biggest fairs for camels, horses, and livestock is the Pushkar fair. Together with animal trading, it is a significant time of year for Hindus to visit the Pushkar Lake for pilgrimage. Given the milder weather and the plethora of vibrant cultural themes, the Pushkar fair has grown to be a prominent tourist destination for both domestic and foreign visitors. Dances, tugs of war involving both male and female teams, the “matka phod,” the “bridal competition,” camel races, and others are examples of cultural events and competitions.

Many thousands of people visit the fair’s location on the shores of Pushkar Lake. Men exchange camels, horses, cows, sheep, and goats among themselves as well as other livestock. The handcraft stalls selling bracelets, clothing, textiles, and materials are frequented by rural families. The festival begins with a camel race, followed by music, songs, and displays. The test to see how well the camel can transport the stuff is the one that is most anticipated among these events. One by one, the men get up upon the camels to make their point.

On the western side of the Aravalli mountains, in Rajasthan’s center-east, sits Pushkar. Pushkar is located about 40 kilometres (25 miles) northeast of Kishangarh Airport in Ajmer. All of India’s main cities are well connected to Jaipur. Ajmer and Pushkar are connected by Pushkar Road (Highway 58), a road that crosses the Aravalli Range of mountains, and are separated by around 10 kilometres (6.2 mi). Ajmer is also the closest significant railway STATION.
