Shekhawati

Known for its frescoes and beautiful murals, Shekawati is not only an open-air art gallery, but also known for its business tycoons and the enterprising spirit of its residents. This is a semi-desert region in northern Rajasthan, completely within the Delhi-Bikaner-Jaipur triangle. Shekawati is a region, not just a city or a fort. Named after the ruler Rao Sheka. Shekawati means garden of Sheka.

The city of Shekawati is famous for its stunningly beautiful havelis. Haveli’s appeal is why the area has been dubbed ‘the open art gallery of Rajasthan’. Rich havelis with a rich artistic tradition are both admirable and intriguing. Most of the buildings date from his 18th century to his early 20th century. The Shekawati countryside is dotted with so many havelis that tracking them down is like a treasure hunt.

Climate

Shekhawati has hot summers because it is in a desert area, which limits the fun of a vacation because one cannot jump around. From March through June, the temperature varies from 32°C to 45°C.

Location

The historical Shekhawati region is semi-arid and is situated in Rajasthan, India’s northeast. The Shekhawat Rajputs were in charge of the area. North Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region includes the districts of Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. Sikar is situated to the west of the Aravalis.

History of Shekhawati

This area has been regarded by several historians as belonging to the Matsya monarchy. The Rigveda also offers some supporting data in this regard. This region is known as “Brahmrishi Desha” according to Manusmriti. Up until the Ramayana era, the Shekhawati region was a part of the “Marukantar Desha.” Only Avanti and the Kingdom of Virata were included among the 16 mahajanapadas that existed before Buddha when it came to the Rajasthan region. Avanti had an impact on this area as well, but Nandas of Magadha eventually overcame him. According to historians, Nandas gave the Rajasthan to the Mauryas. Shekhawati was not just the two current districts in the past. It was referred to as Matsya Kingdom during the Mahabharata era and reached all the way to the Sarasvati River. King Matsya, the son of King Uparichara Vasu, founded the Matsya Kingdom. He was given the name Matsya because he was born from an apsra that was living as a fish. This area was divided among multiple janapadas in antiquity. The famed Dhosi Hill, which borders Haryana and is known for housing Chyavana Rishi’s Ashram and serving as the initial location where Chyawanprash was created, has numerous references in the epic Mahabharat in Vanparv. The Chauhan Rajputs ruled over the Shekhawati after the Gupta dynasty was overthrown. They were robbed of some of Shekhawati, Jhunjhunu, Fatehpur, and Narhar by the Kaimkhanis, who were later vanquished by Shekhawat Rajputs. A branch of the Chauhan family is known as Kaimkhani. Karamchand, the first Kaimkhani, was a member of the Chauhan tribe and a descendant of Dadrewa’s king Moterao. He was converted to Islam by Firuz Shah Tughluq, who gave him the name Kaimkhan. His offspring are known as Kaimkhani as a result.
